A.E. Stillwell's "Puff Piece"
This document is part of a larger newspaper article on Arthur Edward Stillwell. Read as sort of “puff piece,” this article portrays Mr. Stillwell as a successful philanthropist and man of faith. President of the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railroad, Stillwell pursued building the railroad out of pure ambition. He does not have economic motivations per the article which mentions that he is an heir to a large fortune and does not need to work. This privilege, however, is not something Stillwell wanted to rely on so he opened and operated his own printing press at the age of 21. THough his printing press eventually folded, Stillwell went on to be an impressive Life Insurance salesman. Although highly effective at this endeavor, Stillwell's heart was not in it and he moved on to other pursuits. Herein lies the railroad. The article takes good measure to portray Stillwell as a man of God. According to Mr. Stillwell himself, there would be no philanthropic prosperity without his faith. The article details an event in Stillwell’s life wherein his faith in Christian Science was concretized. It begin with an illness he contracted while traveling back to Kansas City from the Waldorf-Astoria. He was eventually cured by Christian Science treatment from Christian Science healers. This propelled Stillwell towards God. Stillwell had a large organ installed in his car so that he can perform Christian hymns. Attached is an illustration of this image.
